Our Vessel: M/V Haendel
The centerpiece of our programs is the M/V Haendel, a 45-foot steel-hulled trawler constructed for the Army Corps of Engineers in 1965. Our vessel is fully insured as a commercial vessel, and is subject to regular Coast Guard safety inspections.
Features of our Program Designed to Ensure a Safe, Comfortable Trip:
- A fully trained lead instructor and crew is provided for every cruise.
- Life preservers are available for all passengers, and may be worn at the discretion of trip leaders or crew.
- Safety procedures are reviewed at the start of each cruise.
Vessel Capacity:
The M/V Haendal is Coast Guard certified to be safe and stable for 32 adult passengers, plus crew. However, we prefer to keep numbers on-board well below that level when possible. In order to ensure a pleasant cruise, we recommend:
- No more than 25 students for an Introductory Level Cruise- simply to ensure space to move around and participate comfortably.
- No more than 20 students for WaterLab Cruises- too many idle hands can create havoc! Our policy is to try and ensure that all students have something to do during the lab portion of our cruises. Typically, we find that small lab teams of 4 students are ideal, and we can accommodate as many as five teams at once on the M/V Haendel.
Do You Have More Than 25 Students? No problem- our "Land & Water" format is designed with
larger numbers in mind!
